Shivaji Bhonsle also known as Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, was a Maratha warrior king and the founder of the Maratha Empire in western India in the 17th century. He was born in 1630 in the hill fort of Shivneri, near the city of Junnar in what is now the state of Maharashtra. Shivaji was the son of Shahaji Bhonsle, a Maratha general who served the Deccan Sultanates. Shivaji's mother was Jijabai, the daughter of Lakhujirao Jadhav of Sindkhed.
Shivaji was raised in Pune and later established a capital at Raigad. He is known for his military tactics and innovations, such as the creation of a navy and the use of guerrilla warfare. He was also a great patron of the arts and literature, and is remembered for his progressive policies and administration.
Shivaji's kingdom covered much of present-day Maharashtra, parts of Karnataka, and Konkan region of Gujarat. He was crowned as the Chhatrapati (monarch) of his realm at Raigad in 1674. He died in 1680 and was succeeded by his son Sambhaji.
